Earn-a-Bike is an introduction to Freewheelin’, bicycle maintenance, riding safety, and a culture of growth. Youth aged 10-18 learn-and-earn in this hands-on, entry-level course. Topics covered include:
- Tool identification, use, and safety
- Fixing a flat
- Cleaning and lubricating a chain
- Parts identification
- Riding Safely on the Road in a Group
- Inquiry based project learning
We focus on identifying strengths, creative problem-solving, persistence to improve, and empathy. Weather permitting, the course includes group rides to help them connect to the city and culminates in a hands-on test. By demonstrating they have learned the skills we teach in class, youth earn a bike, a helmet, lock, light and the status of Green Apron. The status of Green Apron provides the privilege to come to Bike Lab.
